Statement of Purpose

I introduce myself as Alfredo Any, an INTO Graduate Pathway student aspiring to continue pursuing Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in George Mason University which will be started in Spring 2015.

The reason I chose to pursue Master’s degree of Science in Electrical Engineering is because I want to learn more about Electrical Engineering, especially in Control and Robotics field, and learn how to apply the latest developments in the real life. I want to study and understand all of the things in industries and enterprises, those do research and development in Control and Robotics. I find many things related to this field are interesting and worthy to be learned. Robot manipulators, mobile robots, and biologically-inspired robots (including animal-like robots and humanoid robots) have been proved to be useful in certain needs, such product-making process in factories by using robot manipulators, search and rescue missing people in the woods by using quadcopters equipped with GPS and camera, and life assistance in social lives by using biologically-inspired robots. Electrical Engineering, especially in Control and Robotics sub-field, makes life easier, and also becomes a base to create helpful robots for doing human things. I have a great interest in innovating the Control and Robotics systems in order to make another helpful things for humans.

My personal goal after completing this degree to work in an enterprise or a company which develop robots and control systems to be used essentially in our lives. I want to develop a new technology which could assist our lives in routine things, especially for those people who have physical disabilities. I have always dreamt of developing a new second body to be used freely and perfectly by them, with great improvement and effectivity. By reaching the goal of my professional life, I can also provide benefits to other people, not only economically, but also prosperously.

I am fascinated with the current topic of robotics field, which is the invention of biologically-inspired robots. I am focusing on the realization of humanoid robots, which is really hard to be created and need further research about the innovation of the body parts. Topics like this in IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation and IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation are being discussed and researched in many ways. The positive and negative impacts of robots, the development of robot’s body parts such as artificial hand, artificial skin, chest’s spinal rotation, and brain controlled robots are discussed and developed in the articles of the journal. I have a goal to invent a complete functional humanoid robots and robot manipulators which can be used and sold to industries and ordinary people by doing research on the development of biologically-inspired robots. I am going to get involved in the Research Project in ECE Department of Volgenau School of Engineering as a part of my course credits, which can help me build my knowledge on control and robotics systems. I look forward to doing a project with my colleagues and professors in Electrical Engineering: Control and Robotics program during the second year of my study. I hope my research project would help other students finishing their projects, with a lot of collaborations involved. By doing this thing, we can help each other as students, and completing our studies in George Mason University, and gain our Master’s degree. I am going to try my best to be useful in doing my research project, and hopefully I can help my professor and my colleagues to further their research, by working cooperatively. I also look forward to getting an internship provided in my department in order to build my skills and experience in working in real life. I believe that internship is the most important thing for me to prepare the best of my future in becoming an expert in my field.

For long-term, I am planning to use my knowledge and skills in Electrical Engineering: Control and Robotics systems in working with a big company that focuses in innovating and creating robots and control systems. The example of the companies that I am targeting to work for are: Microsoft, Sony, and any other developing enterprises. I have always dreamt to work with Sony, and I succeed, I am planning to go to Japan and work for Sony, in collaboration with companies in United States. I hope by working with one of those enterprises, I could invent a better and more useful technology for the sake of human’s lives. It has always been my dream to innovate technology to make a better future for the citizens of the world.
